There's something refreshingly old-fashioned about shopping in Highworth — in the best possible way. The town centre is genuinely independent in character, the shops sit in historic buildings, and on Saturdays the Market Place fills with stalls just as it has, on and off, since the charter of 1206. Here's your guide to who's who along the High Street.
Food and everyday essentials
From a proper traditional butcher to a quick pint of milk, the town centre covers the everyday basics without a trip into Swindon. And don't forget the Saturday market in the Market Place for fresh produce, bread, cheese and more.
Andrews Quality Meats
ButcherA traditional family butcher right on the High Street. The meat comes from local farms and is hung for 28 days before being cut by skilled butchers. They're licensed game dealers too, so in season you'll find pheasant, partridge and venison alongside homemade pies, sausage rolls and their popular dry-aged steaks.
Open Tuesday to Saturday 7am–3pm (Saturdays close 1pm); closed Sunday and Monday.
Co-op Food
SupermarketThe town's main supermarket, on Brewery Street just off the High Street. Handy for a full grocery shop as well as top-ups — and right next door to the post office, so you can do two errands in one go.
Tesco Express
Convenience storeA convenience-sized Tesco a short walk from the town centre. Useful for early starts and late finishes, with long opening hours every day.
Open 6am–10pm daily.
Highworth Pharmacy
PharmacyThe town's NHS community pharmacy, tucked just off the Market Place on Sheep Street. As well as prescriptions, it offers NHS services including vaccinations, contraception and health checks.
Open Monday to Friday 9am–5.30pm, Saturday 9am–5pm; closed Sunday.
Highworth Post Office
Post officeThe post office is on Brewery Street, a few steps from the High Street. Stamps, parcels, banking and the usual counter services.
Dillons Newsagents
NewsagentA High Street newsagent for your papers, magazines and bits and pieces — the kind of small everyday shop that keeps a town centre ticking.
Saturday tip: time your shop for a Saturday morning and you can pick up fresh produce, bread and cheese from the Charter Market stalls while you're at it. The market runs 8am–2pm in the Market Place — see our market page for the full story.
Gifts and independents
This is where Highworth's High Street really shines. Independent shops sit in the town's historic buildings, and you can browse for a card, a bunch of flowers or a present without seeing a single chain store.
Highworth Emporium
Gifts & cards Award winnerAn award-winning independent gift and card shop spread across five themed rooms, including a seasonal room that changes through the year — from Valentine's and Easter right through to Christmas. You'll find well-loved brands like Jellycat, Wrendale Designs and Charlie Bears alongside handmade and quirky pieces, plus balloons for celebrations. A repeat finalist and winner at the national retail (RETAS) awards — and well worth losing half an hour in.
Highworth Flowers
FloristThe town's florist, trading on the High Street for decades. Fresh flowers for every occasion, from weddings to funerals, plus indoor and outdoor plants and small gifts — vases, candles, balloons and chocolates. Local delivery is part of the service.
Visit Highworth Visitor Information Centre shop
Local makersRun by Visit Highworth, the visitor centre on the High Street doubles as a small shop. It's a good first stop for local books, information and work by local makers — and for finding out what's on in town.
Open Tuesday to Friday 10am–3pm, Saturday 9am–2pm. Worth checking before you make a special trip.
Make a morning of it. Browse the Emporium, pick up flowers, then treat yourself — the High Street has cafés and pubs aplenty when the shopping's done. See eat & drink and the pub guide for where to refuel.
Hair and grooming
For a town its size, Highworth is well served for haircuts — three places on the High Street alone.
Highworth Turkish Barbers
BarberA popular Turkish barbershop on the High Street offering cuts, fades, beard trims and traditional hot towel shaves. Open seven days a week, and consistently well reviewed locally.
Open Monday to Saturday 9am–7pm, Sunday 10am–4pm.
The Directors Cut Barbers
BarberA traditional barbers on the High Street for cuts and trims, with early opening on weekdays and Saturday mornings.
Open Monday to Friday 8.30am–5pm, Saturday 8am–12.30pm; closed Sunday.
Headlines Hair & Beauty
SalonA High Street salon covering hairdressing and beauty treatments for the whole family. Best to ring ahead or call in to book.
Before you set off
The shops sit close together at the top of the hill, so once you've parked, everything is on foot. A few links to help you plan.
Good to know: opening hours can change, especially for the smaller independents — it's always worth a quick call before making a special journey. For where to leave the car (and where to find the loos), see our car parks & toilets page.
