Almost everything on this page is within walking distance of the High Street, and most of it clusters around one spot: The Elms Recreation Ground, home to the recreation centre, the football and cricket pitches, the tennis courts and the juniors' clubhouse. Park once and you can watch a match, swim a few lengths and play a set of tennis without moving the car. For where to leave it, see our car parks & toilets page.
Swim, gym and indoor sport
The town's indoor sports hub sits at The Elms, just off the town centre. Locals simply call it "the Rec Centre".
Highworth Recreation Centre
Pool Gym ClassesRun by Halo Leisure, a registered charity and social enterprise, the Rec Centre has a 25-metre, four-lane swimming pool with lessons and aqua classes, a well-equipped gym and a full programme of group exercise classes, including an indoor cycling studio. The sports hall takes badminton, squash, table tennis, short tennis, five-a-side football, basketball and netball — walking netball included. There are gymnastics sessions for children aged 4 to 8, birthday party packages and school holiday activity programmes too.
Open Monday to Thursday 7am–10pm, Friday 7am–8.30pm and weekends 8am–2.30pm (check for holiday hours). Monthly memberships run from around £30 to £41.50, with discounted rates for young people, key workers and people on benefits — prices change, so check the website for the latest.
Good to know: parking at the Rec Centre is free, whether you're a member or not.
Football for every age
Football runs deep in Highworth — from four-year-olds at Saturday morning sessions to over-65s playing walking football, all based around The Elms Recreation Ground.
Highworth Town FC
Senior football Est. 1893Founded in 1893 and nicknamed the Worthians, the town's senior club plays in the Hellenic League Premier Division. Their ground at The Elms holds 2,000 (150 seated), and the floodlights were switched on in style in 1994 with a friendly against QPR — still the record crowd. Recent highlights include winning the Hellenic League in 2004–05 and a run to the FA Vase semi-finals in 2014–15. The ground is shared with the cricket club, so one side of the pitch is fenced off during the football season. Fixtures and news are on the club website.
Highworth Town Juniors FC
Junior football Ages 4+One of the area's biggest junior setups, with more than 30 boys' and girls' teams plus three Ability Counts teams for disabled players — reportedly the first such programme in Wiltshire. Football starts at age 4 with the Hawks Saturday morning sessions, and there are holiday clubs at half-terms and a pathway all the way through to adult football. The club is FA accredited and was named South West Community Club of the Year in 2013. New players are signed up through the club website.
Highworth Town Walking Football Club
Walking football Over 50sFormed in June 2018, this friendly club welcomes players aged 50 and over, with over-60s and over-65s sessions too. You can play purely for fun, or join the competitive sides in the Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Thames Valley walking football leagues. Session times and venues are listed on the club website — a great way back into the game at a gentler pace.
Cricket, tennis and bowls
Three long-established clubs keep summer sport alive in Highworth — and two of them keep going all winter too.
Highworth Cricket Club
CricketCricket has a long home at the Elms Recreation Ground, which the club shares with Highworth Town FC. The club fields teams in the Wiltshire County Cricket League. If you fancy a game, the easiest way in is to ask at the Elms or via the town's community channels — our clubs & activities page is a good place to start.
Highworth Tennis Club
Tennis FloodlitA friendly, progressive club with five recently refurbished courts, all with LED floodlights so you can play year-round. There are social doubles sessions on Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7pm to 9pm, twelve adult and junior teams in local leagues, and coaching for all levels through the club's coaching partner. Not a member? You can book a court from £6 an hour.
The membership year runs 1 March to 28 February — join online via ClubSpark, or email membership@highworthtennis.com or enquiries@highworthtennis.com.
Highworth Bowls Club
Bowls Est. 1936Established in 1936, the club has a six-rink green rated one of the best in the area, plus a roomy clubhouse and bar. Lawn bowls fills the summer; in winter members carry on with short mat bowls, crib, bingo and league skittles. New members are always welcome, and a social membership gives access to the bar and club events if you'd rather not bowl. The club is affiliated to Bowls England, Bowls Wiltshire and the Swindon & District association — get in touch via the contact form on the website.
Golf on the edge of town
Highworth's golf story has two halves: a thriving family-run course on the edge of town, and a much-loved old course whose future is still being decided.
Wrag Barn Golf Club
18 holes Driving range Visitors welcomeA family-run 18-hole parkland course on the Shrivenham Road, designed by Simon Gidman and opened in 1989. It plays 6,622 yards off the back tees, par 72, with lovely views over the Vale of White Horse — the par-3 5th over a pond is the signature hole. There's an 11-bay driving range, a 6-hole academy course, putting green, pro shop and coaching from the resident golf academy. Visitors are always welcome and tee times can be booked online; the clubhouse also hosts weddings and events. Email info@wragbarn.com.
The old golf course: watch this space
The nine-hole pay-and-play course off the Swindon Road (the former Highworth Golf Centre, south of town on the A361) closed in 2019 when the operator withdrew. Since then the 102-acre site has become one of Highworth's big local questions: the town council and community groups have proposed turning it into a country park or nature reserve, while Swindon Borough Council has also considered housing options for part of the site. At the time of writing no final decision has been made.
Running, martial arts and fitness
Plenty of ways to keep moving, whatever your pace.
Highworth Running Club
Running Trail runsA small, friendly club for all abilities — whether you want to race anything from 5K to a marathon or just enjoy a gentle jog and a chat. Winter Wednesday runs leave from the old library car park at the top of Eastrop at 6.30pm; in summer the club meets at local pubs for countryside runs followed by a drink. There are Monday track sessions in Swindon and Saturday morning trail runs too — check the website for current times before you turn up. The club also organises the Highworth 5 mile road race each spring, one of Wiltshire's most popular early-season races.
